Karnataka’s Latest Rain Alert: IMD’s Thunderstorm Warning
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh Karnataka rain alert as several districts brace for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms this week. Between October 8 and October 12, widespread rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds is expected across South Karnataka and coastal regions, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Kodagu.
Yellow Alert for 21 Districts
According to IMD and KSNDMC reports, a yellow alert has been issued for 21 districts in Karnataka. Regions like Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi may experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid open fields, and keep away from electric poles or trees during lightning activity.
Rainfall Pattern and Forecast
- October 8–10: Widespread light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers in South Interior Karnataka.
- October 10–12: Increased intensity in Coastal Karnataka and Malnad regions.
- Bengaluru: Likely to see evening thunderstorms and heavy rain spells through the week.
IMD has warned of possible waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flash floods in urban areas due to consistent downpours.
Authorities on Alert
The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and local civic bodies are on alert to respond to emergencies. Citizens are urged to report any tree falls, electric line damages, or waterlogging to helpline numbers released by the BBMP and KSNDMC.
Farmers in affected regions have also been advised to secure harvested crops and agricultural equipment to prevent rain damage.
Safety Precautions
- Avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms.
- Stay away from metal objects, electric poles, and isolated trees.
- Keep your electronic devices charged in case of power cuts.
- Follow updates from IMD and local authorities.
- Use rain gear and stay indoors during lightning activity.
IMD’s Extended Outlook
Meteorologists say the post-monsoon trough and moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea are contributing to these weather conditions. The state may continue to see scattered rainfall well into next week before conditions stabilize.
