Built in 1238 by the powerful Conti family during the papacy of Innocent III, the Torre dei Conti was once one of the tallest towers in medieval Rome—originally standing around 50–60 meters tall.
Centuries of earthquakes and urban changes have reduced it to roughly 29 meters, but it remains one of Rome’s most iconic heritage structures.
The tower has long symbolized the city’s medieval past, standing just a few hundred meters from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Restoration efforts had been underway to preserve its aging masonry, which had shown signs of erosion and instability.
